A few electromagnet questions?
1. Is there risk of electric shock when making an electromagnet. All this “current” buisness has me thinking this thing is a giant van de graph generator.
2. For the iron core, where would I go to find a nice thick iron rod?
3. Which matters more for the strength of the field: length of iron core or thickness?
4. Will I know before hand what the magnetic poles (N,S) are on my magnet? How do I find this out before hand?
ALL electromagnets require a DC (Direct Current) power source. AC (Alternating Current) will not work.
1) It depends on the power source you use. You can make an EXPERIMENTAL electromagent with a DryCell battery, or maybe just a couple of ‘D’ flashlight cells hooked in series, In this case, there is NO shock hazard.
2) Hardware stores like Ace, Lowes, and Home Depot sell iron rods, usually in 3- or 4-foot lengths. Use a hack saw with a metal-cutting blade to cut the rod down to shorter size. For experimental units, buy a BIG nail.
3) Thickness has more effect than length, but the biggest effect is caused by the number of wraps of wire AROUND the core. Note that the wraps have to be neat and clean, not a “scramble wound” rat’s nest of wire.
4) The polarity of the magnet is affected by the polarity of the DC (Direct Current). The north pole of the electromagnet is determined by using your Right Hand. Wrap your fingers around the coil in the same direction as the current is flowing (current is said to flow from POSITIVE to NEGATIVE). The direction your thumb is pointing is the direction of the magnetic field, so north would come out of the electromagnet in the direction of your thumb.
