Road bike or Hybrid bike?

I have a mountain bike right now, it’s a cheap, 90 dollar bike, and broke down a few times, and I constantly have to repair it. I bike around 30-60 miles a day. I don’t do alot of mountain biking, in fact, I do mostly road biking. I want to buy a road bike, with the drop bars because I’m seriously considering trying bike racing, but I can’t afford any decent bikes under 200 dollars.
I could buy a 40 year old shwinn bike thats fixed up for 175, how would that be?
I also just got an oppertunity to get a Trek Men’s 7100 Hybrid Bike: it has 21 speeds, 700C(What does that mean?)
What the difference between hybrids and road bikes? If I want to do good road biking, how would a hybrid work(If I want to bike 30-60 miles a day, and train to eventually go for racing), and is it possible to get drop bars for a hybrid? How good is a Trek Men’s 7100 Hybrid Bike? What does 700C mean?

That old Schwinn has the potential to be a costly mistake. Making repairs and finding replacement parts that are compatible with bikes of that era are somewhere between difficult and next to impossible. I’d let someone very knowledgeable with bikes make that purchase. It’s just not worth the headache or disappointment.

If you’re determined to get a road bike for near $200, your choices will be very limited, and they’ll all be used. The very oldest I’d suggest would be something from the the very late 80s. You could get something like a Centurion Ironman (Master or Expert) in very good condition for that budget. These were respectable road bikes made with quality steel, 7-sp cassettes, alloy rims, downtube shifters, and good components. Other, perhaps more preferable, choices would include bikes from the early to mid-90s. These “more modern” bikes had 8-sp cassettes which are readily available should you need a replacement, and they use the same 130mm rear hub spacing found on today’s road bikes; thus, mounting a current wheel is really a nonissue should you wish to do so, regardless of the frame material.

Buying used bikes can be tricky. You need to carefully inspect the bike to look for potential issues (cracked frame, damaged components, etc), and this really isn’t possible if you don’t have some bike knowledge. You also need to be sure it fits you correctly, or can be made to fit correctly with little expense. It would be of great benefit to take a knowledgeable friend with you on your search.

If you’ve got cycling clubs in your area, don’t be afraid to contact them. There’s always the possibility that a member has a bike (or knows of one) they’re willing to unload reasonably.

BTW, the Trek 7100 is a good bike for casual recreation and riding on bike paths. It’s good for getting out, commuting, and getting some basic fitness. But a road bike it is not. If you think you need a road bike, don’t make matters worse by blowing your budget on the wrong type of bike.
