The new tool for the safety of older drivers: Brain Training Games. AAA Foundation CEO Explains

The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety has recently started to recommend the formation of new brain "DriveSharp driver safety program, developed by Pòsit Science. DriveSharp is a computerized cognitive assessment and training tool based on research Karlene Ball Fitness elderly cognitive and motor development.
Commenting on the new Peter Kissinger, CEO of the AAA Foundation, said recently that "Part of making our country safer roads is to help older drivers who want to stay active – a rapidly growing population – maintain or improve their driving safety. "
We have Peter Kissinger us to discuss the context of this innovative initiative.
Question: Peter, thanks for your time. To set the context, could present the role and priorities of the AAA Foundation?
Answer: Sure. As you know, the AAA has more than 50 million members. The Foundation AAA Traffic Safety focuses on four main areas of work:
– Establish a culture of road safety. It is a scandal that has related death every 13 minutes driving in the U.S., and yet we seem to accept that the status quo
– Improve road safety, especially on rural roads where almost 60% of deaths occur
– Improved security in teenagers, one of the highest risk groups
– Improve security for the elderly, other high-risk group.
Q: I have understood that their priorities are safety for teens and older drivers?
A: Yes, you probably has seen the risk curve in U which shows that the risk of accidents is very high among teenagers, then decrease and remain stable throughout our 60 years, then increases again.
We have supported initiatives such as DriverZED (See www.driverzed.org ) To help teenagers to identify and better manage conventional sources of risk, so they move more quickly through the learning curve. For older adults who wish to continue rolling, we must ensure a fair balance between the privilege of driving to the right to mobility – we know that the loss of driving ability has consequences negative for the person.
Q: Given the trends of population aging, it is clear we need to develop better systems to balance these two objectives you mentioned, security and mobility. Do you as a society, we are ready?
A: I do not think we are, and I am pessimistic that we will be short term. This is a very important official estimates say that the proportion of all drivers who are over 65 years from the current 15% to 25% in 2025.
Let me explain the background: two years ago we created a workshop to determine the status of the investigation and the state of the practice of road safety in the elderly. The main conclusion was that the current system of licensing is insufficient, inconsistent and do not reflect the available research. For example, age itself is not is the most important indicator of driver safety, because different people within the same age group may have different levels of cognitive skills that affect their ability driving.
The problem is that this is a very sensitive stage: the quality of the DMV is usually measured by the latency and easy to renew the license …. so will be difficult for a politician to challenge this situation and make serious efforts in the best driving ability tests and assessment tools.
Some states like Maryland and California are leading the innovation based on recent research, but it remains to see if their best practices will be more widely adopted.
Q: Innovation probably spread more quickly when presented as a preventive intervention to maintain the status conductor physics, as the AAA Foundation announces Pòsit Science. Can you explain the reason for the initiative?
R: Exactly. The main characteristics of the problem are obvious anyone who is involved in driver safety research. The challenge is what we can do about it. In our work we are constantly evaluating several potential programs, such as how to obtain greater participation from the medical community, and we decided to offer a screening cognitive training as DriveSharp.
We decided to recommend DriveSharp for two reasons. First, it validates both as a tool to detect security the driver and as a training tool for cognitive functions (useful field of view, processing speed) that are essential for carrying out particular among the elderly. Second, technology is highly scalable – many drivers have easy access to affordable benefits.
We truly believe based on research we have seen, this program can help reduce the rate of accidents among older drivers, but obviously we need to examine how 51 million AAA members (and other drivers) end up using what benefits they will get. Previous research has shown that we expect to see a 50% risk of accidents responsibility of those who follow the program.
Q: Assuming that the results are as good as expected, which would be the next logical step for those responsible politicians and car insurance?
A: I think insurance companies are beginning to see the value of these programs quickly and offer free or with a large discount to their members because they understand the direct financial benefits to non-financial benefits of having safer drivers.
It will take time for policy makers to catch up. But I think in the long term we see this kind of technology that was introduced in the context of integration processes authorization.
